Evening in SoCo, and the Austin bridge bats..

Monday night was awesome... Just a series of random choices that worked out great..

We headed out to a funky neighborhood, known as "SoCo" - for Southern Congress St.
This is a mix of hipsters, artists, students, Austinites, and tourists. Very busy, with an eclectic choice of food and entertainment all the time.

I was intending to get food at the row of lunch trucks, but found they were closed on Mondays.

We then headed down the street, and noticed a real nasty storm approaching, black clouds, and lightning. We had to retreat or find a place to hang that was covered. We came across "the snack bar"...

What a great little place! Farm to Table, mostly organic fare, a great menu. great bar and beer selection, and Super Dog Friendly (the Spoiled Dogs photo was taken here a few days later. We got a seat right as it began to pour. After the storm passed, while i was enjoying a great beer, and the dogs were soaking up the attention from all, a double rainbow appeared right out in front of all of us. The oohs and ahhs sperad through the place as folks noticed it. What a great spontaneous outing! i returned several times to the snack bar, and ate several choices from the interesting menu.

We then went down the road to the river, and caught the nightly flight of the bats. The Austin Bridge Bats are the largest Urban Bat colony in the world. Nightly, at sunset, 1.5 million Mexican tailed bats leave the roost and go off to eat insects. While this is not something i'd like to stand under, watching it from the park on shore, or the bridge is awe inspiring - its 20 minutes of continuous bats, like a shiny black river taking off into the sky.  My photos did not come out well, as the sunset was affected by the passing storm clouds. I grabbed some from the internet to show it a little better. We met several groups of interesting people before, during and after, and some more suggestions of things to do in Austin.

I topped off the night stopping at a Cupcake Place in a polished Airstream Trailer..."Hey Cupcake!"  they were gooood cupcakes!

This was a great night out on a Monday!
